How to Dry and Store Your Cookie Cutters

There are so many cookie cutters out there!  I began my collection quite a while ago, but it has multiplied significantly over the past few years. No one really told me how to organize my cutters. Here is what I have come up with.  But before I explain how I organize my cookie cutters, I'll explain how to prevent metal cutters from rusting.

After using any cutters, I always soak them in a bowl with warm water and soap.  I then clean each cutter with a sponge and more soap and water to ensure that all of the grease is removed.

A great tip that I learned from the book Cookie Craft is how to keep metal cookie cutters and icing tips from rusting.

After individually washing and towel drying each cutter, place metal cutters on a cookie sheet, cut side down. Next, place the sheet in the oven for 10 minutes at 200 degrees. This will absorb any remaining moisture.

Finally, set warm cutters on a towel to cool before putting them away.

The way that I organize my cutters is usually by theme. I write the name of the theme on a Ziploc bag and store the bag in a plastic container.  Inside the front of the container I write down the names of the themes on a piece of paper facing outward.

This way, I can see which cutters are in which container.

Other suggestions may be to organize your cutters by shape or size.
Hope this helps!
Melissa :)

  2. Hey Mel,
This is a bite off subject, but if anyone you know uses a wooden rolling pin, tell them not to soak their rolling pin in water. Because as you know there are pores in wood. You are supposed to wipe them off with a paper towel or any kind of towel. And dry it off immediately. Keeps from molding and cracking!!!
    Have a good one!!

  3. I dry my cookie cutters the same way.... cast iron pans too. I keep all my cutters in a large metal cookie tin, but I have to stack them exactly the right way to get the lid on. I like your storage solution.

  4. Good advice, I'll have to try the oven trick the next time I use my metal cookie cutters. I inherited a bunch of plastic ones from my family, so I tend to use them more often.

Also, I noticed Bakerella will be in Toronto in December for her book tour, will you be stopping in to see her? I know she would get a kick out of it!

  9. Dear Melissa,

Thanks for the great tips you have generously shared with us! As for the cookies cutter, where did you get them? I like the duckling cutter and also the rest of them. How long do you need to wait for the icing to dry before storing them in the box? I realised that you flood the cookies with icing and i got experience that it really take quite a while for the icing to dry... i also worried that the cookies are no more crispy after letting out for sometime. Hope you can share yr tips with me. Have a nice day!

  10. Hey Baking Queen,
Many of my cookie cutters are purchased from Creative Cutters in Richmond Hill, Ontario. However, whenever I see ones that I like I buy them right away. St. Lawrence Market also in Toronto, carries a great assortment. After I have flooded cookies, I wait at least 24 hours before packaging them into any type of container. Sugar cookies have a very long shelf life so no need to worry about them drying out. There is plenty of butter in them to keep them fresh and delicious!
    Happy baking!
